Colloquially, it used to be called the “needle drop”—when a Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino picked a piece of preexisting music and laid it down under a dramatic scene, with seismic results. Our Film team recently chose their 50 favorite uses of songs in movies (with the caveat that no tunes composed specifically for a film could be included). We’re not going to lie, we’re a little bummed that our personal favorite from Wayne’s World, shown above, wasn’t higher on the list.
